Dissertations are fun to write.

1. You need to do is choose a subject you are interested in or want to research.

2. Planning is key to the success of the dissertation or any other body of writing. Learn to use your word processor very well and research the referencing system you need to use.

3. Working consistently and methodically every day is the only way to get the work done on time and to a high standard. Reading and re-reading your work correcting, honing and re-working is all part of the work you need to do.

Each university has its own rules -- so specific answers you get here won't help. It is likely that your university has a publication describing the format -- and it is likely that it is located on your school's web site.

I'm not in the UK -- but there are a lot of similarities between the UK system and the US system. So -- let me attempt to answer your questions:

I did not have to write a proposal for my dissertation. But I know that some other schools require it. So -- this will be school specific.

You would have to choose a potential topic before writing the proposal (how could you write one without knowing the topic?).

The structure of the proposal will differ depending on the school -- but also depending on the major field.

The student has to include all references in the dissertation. Of course there can be new references.

The structure of the dissertation depends on many things. I doubt that there is a rule that says it has to have five chapters. Mine had three. I know of others that were more like books, with dozens of chapters. Liberal arts dissertations tend to be very long, while those in the sciences tend to be fairly short.

Yes, you need an abstract, title page, etc. At my school, there was a document that told us the correct order. This is one of the things that differs by school.

Is it 'cos you is black or is it 'cos you is anti-muslim or is it 'cos you is asking the same question over and over with minor alterations?

Spend more time on your college work and less asking the same fracking question again and again.

I think the summary if you are not going to do the study would be how you would do it and what you expected to find i know it is a repeat of your paper in short version but what choice do you have if not doing the study. Also ask your professor if that it the expectation of the committee.
